Al teatro dedicò la vita in veste di impresario, agli indigenti della sua città lasciò un lascito copioso: il raffinato cultore di arte, qui ritratto nella tipica posa dell’intellettuale dedito alle sue carte, sembrerebbe lontano dalla disperazione e dalla miseria dei suoi beneficiati, se il viso scavato e lo sguardo serio non ci parlassero della compassione che lo abita.

As an impresario he devoted his life to the theatre, and when he died he left a plentiful bequest to the needy of the city: this sophisticated connoisseur of art, portrayed here in the typical pose of an intellectual busy with his papers, seems very far from the desperation and the poverty of those he helped, except for his hollow face and his
earnest look which tells us about the compassion rooted in him.
