September 2012 Mission to Cape Town - South Africa for the candidacy to the IFLA Congress 2016

Updated 4-22-2013

The Deputy Mayor in charge of Development, Innovation, Environment, Green and Public Hygiene of the City of Torino Enzo Lavolta went on a mission to Cape Town in South Africa, on the occasion the IFLA - International Federation of Landscape Architects - World Congress 2012 in order to put Torino forward as a candidate to host the 53rd World Congress of Landscape Architects 2016. Torino challenged high profile competitors for being awarded the possibility to host, for approximately one week, thousands of architects whose work is to take care of and preserve the landscape heritage. The voters, coming from all over the world, choose with a wide majority Torino.

The application dossier, whose ambitious and catching title was “Tasting the Landscape”, underlined how our surroundings, as well as the food, should be sensed through all senses, through the mind, the culture and the knowledge.

Torino, which Le Corbusier defined as “the city with the best natural position”, is today recognized as the centre of an historical and cultural heritage of exceptional value, desirable destination also for congress tourism, which nowadays represents a strength of the tourist offer of the city.

A great occasion to let the world know the extraordinary architectural, cultural and landscape heritage of Torino and of Piedmont and at the same time a further great occasion to promote the tourist attractiveness of the city and its territory.
