September/October 2009 Mission to Tirana - Albania

ChiamparinoThe Mayor of the City of Torino led a mission to Tirana in which several bodies of the Torino area were involved, such as the University of Torino, the Politecnico of Torino, the Università degli Studi di Scienze Gastronomiche, the Chamber of Commerce Industry Agriculture Handicrafts of the City of Torino and the Centro Estero per l’Internazionalizzazione del Piemonte. 

During the mission, Mayor Chiamparino, accompanied by the Rectors and the Secretary General of the Chamber of Commerce, was received by the highest offices of the Republic of Albania, the President of the Republic Bamir Topi and the Prime Minister Sali Berisha. During the official meetings the strenghtening of the relationship between our territory and Albania, as well as the increasing integration of the Albanian population in Torino were discussed.

The Mayor of Torino was also received by the Mayor of Tirana, Edi Rama, and during the official meeting a Letter of Intents aiming at promoting the collaboration between the two Cities, specifically as far as e-government and Information and Communication Technology within the Public Administration are concerned. The two Mayors also talked about possible collaborations in other fields of economy and culture, they discussed about different standards for urban development and visited together, as a preview, the biennial exhibition of contemporary art of Tirana. Mayor Chiamparino also received the Key to the City of Tirana as a gift. Moreover Mayor Chiamparino attended the opening of the exhibit “The presence of Italian Architects and Engineers in Albania and their contribution to the Development of the Country of the Eagles”, realized in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture of Torino at the National Museum of Tirana.

The delegation also attended the conference “The economic and productive reality of Torino and the chances for cooperation with Albania and the City of Tirana”, organized by the Chambers of Commerce of the Cities of Torino and Tirana, which eventually signed a Memorandum of Understanding and planned on an entrepreneurial mission in springtime 2010.

Even the Universities from Torino played an important role in several occasions, such as the delivery of the Laurea Honoris Causae to the Chancellor of the Polytechnic of Torino, Professor Profumo. 

During the mission several other occasions to present the Torino city life and several moments of exchange and confrontation with the press took place.
The mission, that involved many actors from the territory of Torino, was coordinated by International Affairs Department of the City of Torino in collaboration with the Ambassy of Italy in Tirana and with the City of Tirana.
