LOUGA

Louga, SenegalLouga is located in North-west Senegal - approximately 200 km north of Dakar and 30 km from the Atlantic coast -  and is capital of the homonymous region. It has about 82,884 inhabitants distributed over an area of 18 km². Louga’s department includes one council, 4 arrondissements and 15 rural communities. The economic activities of the Louga region are based on agriculture, fishing, stock farming, forest exploitation, craftsmanship and commerce. However the first two, together with the informal sector, actually absorb almost the entire active population.

Louga hosts FESFOP, the Folklore and Percussion Festival , an extremely popular music festival renowned in Senegal. Recently the National Percussions Museum has opened.

REASONS FOR THE PARTNERSHIP

The City of Turin undersigned an international cooperation agreement with the City of Louga in 2007 for the following reasons:

  • Shared vocation that considers cultural policies an engine empowering local development;
  • Longstanding presence of Turin’s cooperation actors inside Louga city;
  • Intention to coordinate with the regional, national and European cooperation policies designed for Sahel;
  • Special attention towards one of the poorest countries in the world (HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX: 156th position);
  • Presence in Turin of a considerable Senegalese community – originating from the Louga region - involved in co-development processes.
