Terra Madre
Terra Madre is a network of food communities that is committed, each in its own geographical and cultural context, to safeguarding the quality of local agricultural and food produce. The communities share the problems generated by intensive agriculture that is detrimental to natural resources, and by a mass food industry whose objective is the standardisation of tastes, thus threatening the existence of small producers. Terra Madre is the concrete solution provided by farmers and producers from all over the world.
Almost 9000 people convened in Torino in 2006 for the second edition of Terra Madre , the world meeting of food communities, organised on a biyearly basis by Slow Food , the Ministero delle politiche agricole, alimentari e forestali , the Regione Piemonte and the Città di Torino, : 4803 farmers, breeders, fisherman and traditional food producers from 1583 food communities and 150 nations; 953 cooks, 411 professors and representatives from 225 universities, 2320 observers and guides and 776 volunteers.
An event of international importance, which is not only for sector operators, and whose aim is to compare new projects and new production and development strategies that respect individual identities.
The third edition of Terra Madre will be held between 23 and 27 October 2008.
