A Long Sporting History
Italy’s first national gymnastics club was founded in Turin, in 1844: the Reale Società Ginnastica Torino. It was followed in 1861 by the target shooting federation, and two years later by the Club Alpino Italiano. In 1879, the Turin fencing club opened and this was also a golden era for rowing: the historic Cerea and numerous other clubs created the first rowing federation in 1899.
The Torinese running union was founded in 1897 and it later became the Unione Podistica Italiana, ancestor of the modern Federazione Italiana di Atletica Leggera. In 1899 the Ski Club Torino was born: a few years later skiing became trendy with the middle classes, who began to haunt the modern ski runs in the Alpine valleys.
More than ever nowadays, sport for Turin is a reality that brings enormous satisfaction. The Turin Marathon, an event started in 1991, has recently become a major date on the international sporting agenda.
New champions are born, bred and launched in Turin: like Alessio Boggiatto, the fresh, consolidated star of Italian swimming.
