Torino is the home of the Juventus and Torino football clubs, and of the Olympics. It is also the host city of many important international sporting events, from fencing to golf, basketball and track and field.

The world of sports in Torino is a world of records: the sports club Reale Ginnastica was founded in 1844, the first in Italy; in 1863 the Club Alpino Italiano was founded; in 1880 the first tennis club; in 1889 the Federazione di Canottaggio; in 1901 the first Ski Club; one year later the Unione Podistica Torinese, which later became the Unione Podistica Italiana.
But the real protagonist of the late 19th century is the game that conquered the nation: soccer. In 1897 Torino saw the birth of the Sport Club Juventus and in 1906 it was the turn of the Football Club Torino: "Juve" and "Toro," two teams that still today enthuse Italians and fans throughout the world.

But the records don’t end there: in 1959 the Summer Universiade was born, followed by the Winter version in 1966 – and in 2007 it took place once again in Torino.

Plus, in 1985 Italian free climbing began here, and in the 1990s two important events regained their top international status, the Turin Marathon and the Meeting Internazionale di Atletica Leggera, the track and field event that was later renamed the Memorial Primo Nebiolo.

Today – after the 2006 XX Olympic Winter Games and the 2007 Winter Universiade - this tradition continues: there are many events organized for the upcoming years like the European Championships of Rhythmic Gymnastics and the European Indoor Archery Championships in 2008 and the European Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2009.
