Augusta Taurinorum

In the 3rd century BC, Turin was a small settlement and it was inhabited by the “Taurino” tribes, who descended from the union between Gauls and Celtoligurians. In the Roman period it became a military citadel and in 28BC, under Augustus, the city became Augusta Taurinorum. It was a colony with a checkerboard plan, constructed with parallel, perpendicular streets. This layout was a feature of urban design in the centuries to follow, when Turin was conquered by the Franks and Longobards, then became a bishopric, and later a commune.
