Spina Centrale
A 12-kilometre avenue running south to north: the Spina Centrale, or the Central backbone, created by interring the railway line that cut the city in half. Thanks to this operation, Turin has increased its surface by more than 2 million square metres, which will be used for new production installations, new services, new spaces for culture and socialisation. The Spina comprises a 6-lane dual carriageway, divided by a central reservation planted with oaks, as well as service roads and parking areas. A new lighting system, differentiated by zones, is a unifying feature of the scheme. A cycle path and some artistic points of interest have also been included: several sections of the Spina already include works by Mario Merz, Per Kirkeby and Giuseppe Penone, to be followed by works from artists of international fame: Giovanni Anselmo, Janis Kounellis, Luigi Mainolfi, Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Walter Pichler, Ulrich Rückriem, Gilberto Zorio.
