Keeping the Olympic Spirit Alive

Turin will be the capital of an Olympic event for the second time from May 20 to June 4 when it plays host to the World Chess Olympics. The first official edition took place in London in 1927. The 37th edition is the first time the tournament has been run in Italy and sets a record for the event with 142 participating countries.

All games will take place at the Oval Lingotto, with the Olympic Village hosting all the competing chess federations from Italy, Europe, America, Asia (the reigning champions from China) and Africa. All the games will be played at the Oval and broadcast live on the www.chessolympiad-torino2006.org website, with in the region of 30 million forecast contacts. The Olympic anthem to mark the event has been written by the renowned Ennio Morricone.
