Rocca dei Tetti

Borgo Medievale

The Borgo Medievale (Medieval Village), inaugurated on April 27 1884 as a Section dedicated to Ancient Art of the Italian General Exhibition, was constructed to illustrate various aspects of the civilization of Piedmont in the 15th century.

The Village was designed by architect-archeologist Alfredo d’Andrade (1839-1915) re-adapting architectural models and decorations studied and tracked down in the old towns of the Region. The buildings of the Medieval Village document almost a hundred different environments of Piedmont.
What can only be described as a catalogue of walls, doors, windows, cornice, balconies, fountains, arcaded areas, often embellished with fine details such as locks, hinges, chains, decorated ceilings without obviously forgetting the fully-furnished milieu of the Rocca.
A catalogue able to refocus attention even today on ancient Piedmont’s unequalled wealth of residential architecture, often overlooked by the main tourist trails and in need of new projects to deploy knowledge of this heritage and exalt its value.

With its particular characteristics and its position inside the Valentino Park, the Medieval Village is inserted in the landscape of Turin as a place of recreation and entertainment. Tens of thousands of people visit the Rocca every year and hundreds of thousands flock to the Village whose roads and squares often host cultural manifestations, animation events and meetings.
