Introduction by Natalia Aspesi
In 1842, the concert cafes
of Seville, and the ports of Cadice and
Jerez de la Frontera were first exposed
to Flamenco guitar and cante jondo
(“deep singing”), considered the most
Gypsy-esque of Flamenco. Here resides
the duende, the state of pleasure, grace
or ecstasy, measured by the rhythm of
the palmas, hand clapping, and jaleos,
or the audience’s own verbal exclamations.
As described by Federico García Lorca,
Flamenco is able to transport us to the
edge of the abyss.
