Glasgow
A journey through our cultural & creative city

Glasgow is delighted to be part of this exciting photography partnership showcasing our wonderful Cultural and Creative City.

Glasgow and Torino have enjoyed a formal twinning agreement which was signed back in 2003.  They are often likened, sharing similarities in their industrial past, the deindustrialisation and reinvention as capitals of culture, architecture and the arts, their pragmatic and experimental outlook and their strong international attractiveness.

Both cities enjoy a productive and fruitful twinning partnership working together in the areas of education, sport, youth, culture and business.

Glasgow has a rich local history, which is all around the city and Glaswegians are proud of their diverse history, giving them a sense of pride and identity. A transformed city once known for its industrial past and now one of Culture and Creativity.

Named as the UK’s Top Cultural and Creative City in 2019 as part of a landmark report by the European Commission, Glasgow is proud of its city brand ‘People Make Glasgow’ with the city ranked as Europe’s leader for ‘openness, tolerance and trust’.

Citizens and visitors alike can enjoy Glasgow’s internationally acclaimed trail in contemporary art, design and music, while safeguarding its rich architectural heritage and world-class civic art collection. Our music offering is legendary, stretching across all genres and taking place in an array of venues seven nights a week, from city parks to tables tucked in the corner of traditional pubs.

Embracing traditional and contemporary, Glasgow is home to one of Europe’s largest civic arts collection, with the city’s museums home to masterpieces by Dalí, Van Gogh, Degas, Renoir, Whistler and Monet. In terms of contemporary art, Glasgow has no fewer than eight Turner Prize winners and 12 nominees who have hailed from, trained in, or worked out of the city in recent years.

Home to more than 100 cultural organisations and five of Scotland’s six internationally renowned national performing arts companies, namely the Royal Scottish National Orchestra; National Theatre of Scotland; BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra; Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet.

Culture lovers are spoilt for choice with events and festivals on year-round, with everything from the Glasgow Film Festival (the UK’s third biggest film festival) to Glasgow Jazz Festival (the longest running music festival in the city), from the UK’s biggest Mela (an outdoor multi-cultural spectacular) to Celtic Connections (Europe’s largest winter music festival).

Take a virtual journey with us and enjoy our wonderful City!
