World Wide Torino

Anni precedenti 2005 - 2004

During 2006-2007, collaboration and active involvement of Torino friend Cities continues through the World Wide Torino project, started during the Winter Olympic Games. In the belief that the future of our cities is based on our ability to open up to the world and build new relations. Between 9th and 25th February, about 15,000 people visited World Wide Torino - the pavilion which the City of Torino has dedicated to its thirty friend cities at the Cavallerizza Reale. Opened on February 9th by Mayor Sergio Chiamparino it has attracted many Italian and foreign visitors, as well as 20 official delegations coming from cities of all over the world, such as Athens, Barcelona, Beijing, Lille, London, Lyon, Nagoya. Mayors and Deputy Mayors from the 30 hosted cities attended the events, which focused on various subjects, such as urban regeneration, Olympics and different food-and-wine cultures. The Olympic legacy was the focus of the debate dedicated to Athens, Barcelona and Salt Lake City; the Olympics as a catalyst for urban development was the theme of the debates by Beijing, Vancouver and London; history, architecture and culture was the focus of the experiences of Glasgow, Lille, Lyon, Rotterdam and Zlín; the debate involving Detroit, Kragujevac and Nagoya was about car industry.
Moreover, a cosmopolitan and hearty ambiance was created, by events such as guided tasting from different food-and-wine traditions, debates, movies and music, and also thanks to the continuous presence of delegates from foreign cities.

On the occasion of the year of Torino World Book Capital with Rome (April 2006-April 2007) a space entirely dedicated to Cities having strong relations with Torino and to World Book Capitals has been created at Atrium. Cities were represented by means of videos, listening of traditional tales and in particular through the Library of Friend Cities, made of books to look at that formed an original "urban bibliography", and through city portraits made of meetings with the authors, debates, performances and projections. An opportunity to discover the experiences with books of different world cities, and through them, the relationship network of our City abroad.
