February 1st 2015 Project ALMANAC, one year of activity

The first year of activity of the European project ALMANAC, financed through European funds of the Seventh Framework Programme 2007-2013, came to an end. The City of Torino is partner of an international consortium formed by the Superior Institute Mario Boella of Torino (lead partner), Telecom Italy, two important research centres (the Fraunhofer Institute from Germany, the main European Research Institute, and, from Denmark, the Alexandra Institute, already involved in some of the most known European Smart City initiatives and member of the Danish Smart City Network) and two highly innovative SMEs both in the field of "smart processes" and of the related ICTs (Danish In-Jet and Swedish CNET).

The project, that started on September 1st 2013 and will end on August 31st 2016, aims at realising an ITC platform which - exploiting the already existing network of apps, sensors and indicators and aggregating and checking the data coming from them - could be a useful tool for developing, implementing and managing Smart City services. Once developed the Almanac platform will be tested in three different operational fields, highly representative of the complexity of a Smart City: waste management, water distribution and citizens' involvement.

During the first year the City was involved mainly in the analysis of the operational fields, in the definition of possible implementing scenarios, in the study of functional and non functional needs and requirements for an effective "on field" application of the future experimentations. The main fields involved in such activities were "waste management" (which foresees an in-situ testing in the second semester of 2015) and citizens' involvement (that schedules a practical demonstration of the pilot activity in the end of 2015-beginning of 2016).
