What's it

"Murarte: urban art performances through free expression" is a new project of the Comune di Torino (Turin Townshall).

Ufficio Spazi Metropolitani together with Settore Arredo Urbano, Progetto Speciale Periferie and BIG Torino 2000 have worked together to design and set up this project to offer walls for artistic performances ranging from Writing to different kinds of street art.

In 1999 the Murarte Project was born as an answer to two demands:

  • the need to acknowledge the expressive and creative potential of young unknown artists
  • the need to create low-cost projects to transform neglected buildings.

This is how a number of city walls will be transformed into a kind of "urban canvas", ready to be painted by young artists of Murarte, who, with a pass and letter of authorisation from the Council, are given at least four months to design and paint their designated wall.

The artists must follow a simple ten-points regulation to avoid any disagreement with the Council or citizens.

Joining Murarte is very easy and here is how you can get your wall.

Form: you have to fill in a form you can download from this site or pick up at Informagiovani, Via delle Orfane 20, Torino.
To fill in the form you don't need any identification papers, but if you're out of age Murarte needs your parents' signature.
Take a look at the FORM and at the VADEMECUM anyway.

Registration: bring your form to Murarte, 2nd floor, Via delle Orfane 20, Turin.
Your personal data will be entered into the Murarte database, to be used only for the project. And now you're on!

Waiting: after your registration Murarte needs some time to convince the owners of the walls. We ask you to be patient, but we believe the project is worth waiting for.

At last: the wall is available! Murarte will contact you (usually by phone) to fix a meeting with you and other artists and writers.

Meeting: the meeting will be at the wall to be painted. Murarte will assign you your part of the wall, explain the rules and give you the authorisation papers (a personal pass and a letter that is valid for 4 months).
White paint and rollers will be ready for you if you want to prepare the wall for painting.

Starting Off: the wall is "yours", have fun! Just remember to tell us as soon as you've finished, so we can file your painting in the photo data-bank of our web-site.

Expiry Date: After 4 months your time is unfortunately up, you aren't authorised to continue painting your wall anymore.
If you want you can contact us for a new authorisation for your wall. We'll give you another authorisation for 4 months if we can or put you on a waiting list.
