Sports Holidays
(Motoring and soccer - Mountaineering, climbing, hiking, trekking - Ski and skating - Bicycle, mountain bike and motorbike - Surf, divings - Sail, canoing, windsurf and rafting -underwater activities - Riding tourism - Tennis, volleyball, flying, golf)

The Sport in Italy is very popular. There are three national daily papers that deal exclusively with sport (the "Gazzetta dello Sport", the "Corriere dello Sport-Stadio" and Tuttosport) and a lot of television sections, daily sections or weekly magazines are dedicated to sports people (the transmission more seen is La Domenica Sportiva).
Besides soccer, more seen is the cycling, that has its most famous manifestation in the Giro d'Italia ("Turn of Italy"), a race by stages that crosses all the peninsula and that takes place every year between the end of May and the first days of June.
At this competition not only Italian athletes participate, but also cyclists from all over the world. Another Italians' passion is motoring, in fact quite seen, live , is the world-wide championship of Formula 1 where the Ferrari run.
As popular as the cycling and motoring have become, recently, ski, basketball, volleyball or tennis, that above all win great favour among the young people. Less seen are such other sports, as water-polo, fencing, track-and-field, riding, canoeing and trapshooting, even if the Italian athletes, the Azzurri, achieve remarkable results in international field just in these disciplines, especially in occasion of the Olympic Games.

Football

The most practiced and followed sport in Italy is football, that is played in eleven against eleven (ten players and a goal-keeper). Italian football is divided in four categories: the series A and B (formed by big companies that draw up professional players) and the series C and D (where the players are amateurs, namely have another job besides being football players).
The football season of the series A and B lasts nine months, from September to June, and finishes with the conquest of the "badge", a tricolour symbol of shield shape, that the players of the champion team of Italy will carry on the football jersey in the successive season. Many Italians love to pass the afternoon of Sunday in the stadium to see the match and to support the favourite team or to follow the match on television, at times also live. The teams of series A that finish a season in the first positions are only engaged in the championship in the successive season: they participate also to European competitions, like the Cup of the Champions, the Uefa Cup etc.
The most important and oldest football teams of series A are: in Milan, Inter and Milan; in Turin, Juventus and Turin; in Rome, Lazio and Rome; in Genoa, Sampdoria and Genoa.
The teams of series A are often called with nicknames that derive from the colours of their jerseys. As an example, the players of Fiorentina are called also "Viola", those of Milan "the Rossoneri", those of Inter "the Nerazzurri" and those of Rome "the Giallorossi".
Besides the football teams of every city, Italy has a national team (the Azzurri) that is one of the best in the world. It is formed by the best players of the city teams obligatorily of Italian nationality, while the city teams often engage also foreign football players.

Mountain sport

Mountaineering, climb, hiking, trekking
The mountain tourist activity in Italy doesn't trace back to more than a century ago, and it has been transformed from elite phenomenon into mass phenomenon, from the second post-war period onwards. The alpine area is surely the most famous thanks to its centrality in Europe and to the historical destinations which have become as years go by centres of international mountainous tourism. The most famous centres in the alpine area are: Courmayeur, Livigno Cervinia, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Canazei, la val Gardena, Tarvisio. Along the Apennine ridge, the mountainous tourism centres are less because the meteorological conditions do not permit a very long winter season, however one cannot fail to mention the Abetone, the zones of the emilian area, the Terminillo, very famous thanks to its vicinity with Rome, Abruzzo with all the area of the Gran Sasso, the Sila mounts in Calabria.
