IL PIERCINGUsually at the end of a guided visit to the city this place conquers people who are skeptical about Turin... clinging to an elegant palazzina, the Piercing is a perfect symbol of the "alternative" Turin we love so much.Piazzetta del Corpus Domini corner via Palazzo di Città ![]() |
REFRIGETRATING ROOMSVast underground caves were built under this little square for preserving foodstuffs, giving this district the name "Ghiacciaie" that means "place for the iceboxes". The water was taken from the little canals leaving the Dora river. They can be visited from the underground car park or seen through the pavement grilles in front of Pastis.Piazzetta Emanuele Filiberto |
EXECUTIONER'S STREETIn the beginning it was called the Pusterla district because in the Middle Ages it was open near the Porta Pusterla along the northern side of the city walls. It had, like it has today, roads which are not rectilinear and for this reason contrast with the surrounding ones. However, it has always been known as "Via del Boia" (Executioner's street). It is said that, from 1500, the city executioner (Boia) of Turin lived at number 2. Always dressed in black, he went around the area carrying a bag containing the tools of his trade".Via Bonelli |
THE MIRACLE OF PIAZZETTA CORPUS DOMINITradition has is that on 6 June 1453 there was a miracle in the place where today the church of Corpus Domini stands. On that day a mule knelt down on the road and an ostensory that had been stolen from a nearby church, slipped from the sacks on its back. The consecrated wafer rose up into Heaven in front of the believers, the citizens and the bishop. Seeing is believing: the altarpiece of the church and a very beautiful headstone, surrounded by a railing in wrought iron, are a testimony to the miracle. |
LA REPUBBLICA DI PORTA PALAZZOTHE PORTA PALAZZO REPUBLIC Spontaneity and liberty have always reigned at Porta Palazzo: once the market was called the Republic of Porta Palazzo because it was a world apart, often populated by charlatans. Tales are told of fat women reading palms, sellers of marmot oil as a cure for rheumatism, gurus, strong men and acrobats. |
MADE IN TURIN TOMATOAnd here's something unbelievable: it seems that the system of preserving fruit and vegetables was invented in Turin in Borgo Dora by Francesco Cirio. The Borgo used the water from the River Dora for its early industries, which included Cirio. A commemorative stone and a bas-relief record this fact at Porta Palazzo on the façade at No. 24. |
