The sacred and the profane meet.
The hills, Monte dei Cappuccini
(the Capuchins' Mount) (foto) and the
Gran Madre di Dio (foto), the Murazzi
and the night clubs in piazza
Vittorio. The meeting between the
two was even a blasphemous
osmosis when Profondo Rosso
(Deep Red, a horror film) was shot
in a villa inhabited by nuns...
MONTE DEI CAPPUCCINIFrom here (foto) you have one of the finest views of the city, the hills and the Alps, both from the square in front of the church and from the turret on the second floor of the adjacent Museo della Montagna (The Mountain Museum). The church construction began in 1584 on Ascanio Vitozzi's design. Carlo di Castellamonte supervised the works, which ended in 1656.Via Giardino, 35 |

VILLA DELLA REGINAThe beautiful 'Cardinal's villa (or vineyard)' was designed for Maurizio of Savoia as a place of leisure and fun. After his death the villa was inherited first by his widow Ludovica and then, in 1713, it was given to Anna of Orleans. It has been called Villa della Regina since then. ART NOUVEAU TURINGoing up to the Villa della Regina (foto) and the Monte dei Cappuccini (foto) you will find a lot of Art Nouveau buildings (such as the building at no. 6,Via Villa della Regina, or the house on the corner of via Lanfranchi with via Mancini). The chief attraction is Villa Scott (corso Lanza 57),the famous villa where the film Profondo Rosso (Deep Red) was shot. |
GRAN MADRE DI DIOIt represents the triumph of Neoclassicism in Turin. (foto) In the original design, the square with the same name had porticoes all around. It was built to welcome back King Vittorio Emanuele I in Turin (on 20th May 1814). What makes it attractive is the belief that it might be the vertex of white and black magic as well as a place of apparitions, in particular the spot between Carlo Chelli's statues of Religion and Faith.Piazza Gran Madre di Dio, 4 |
TURIN ARCHIEPISCOPAL SEMINARYFounded in 1567 by Cardinal Girolamo della Rovere in via Garibaldi, it was moved to via Lanfranchi in 1988. It is a place surrounded by trees from which you have a fine view of Turin.Via Lanfranchi, 10 |
OPERA PIA LOTTERIOld people's home opened in 1874 by Reverend Enrico Lotteri with the name of 'Casa dei Santi Angeli' (The Angels' home). Since 1893 it has been called Opera Pia Lotteri after the name of its founder.Via Villa della Regina, 21 |

PIAZZA VITTORIO VENETOThe square (foto) was designed and built between 1825 and 1830 by the engineer Giuseppe Frizzi about ten years after Vittorio Emanuele I Bridge was built. Giuseppe Frizzi was very good at disguising the drop of 7.19 m. between the bridge and via Po. From here you have a beautiful view of the hills, Vittorio Emanuele I Bridge (foto) and the Gran Madre di Dio (foto). It is still the largest square without monuments in Europe. |
