The historical Sassi - Superga rack tramway is the only one of its kind in Italy. It is the present-day continuation of a tradition that started back in 1884 with the Agudio cable railway and has lasted well over one hundred years. At the outset, the train was powered by an engine operating a steel cable, which ran parallel to the tracks. In 1943, the line was converted into a rack tramway and traction was provided by a central rack rail. The tramway has been recently refurbished and visitors can enjoy a trip back in time and the breathtaking view from the original carriages.
The track stretches 3,100 metres from the station of Sassi (225 m above sea level) to Superga (650 m above sea level). The climb from Pian Gambino to the Superga station has an average gradient of 13.5%, peaking at 21%.
From Superga, visitors will catch their breath at the spectacular views over Turin and beyond to the Alps. The Basilica of Superga, designed by Filippo Juvarra, and the tombs of the Savoy royal family are located on the hilltop.
The ticket office is located inside the Sassi station, which also houses the tramway museum. The Visitor Centre for the Ente Parchi della Collina di Superga, the board in charge of local parklands, is located inside the Superga station. The board promotes a number of events focused on raising public awareness about the environment. There is also a bar which doubles as a pizzeria and restaurant near the Sassi station.
Two escorts are available on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons so the facility can be accessed by physically disabled visitors who have booked the trip c/o the GTT tourist service.
Reduced fares for groups of students (minimum number 11): € 2,50 return trip per person, valid everyday including Sundays and public holidays.
Entrance is free for children less than 1 metre tall (each child must be accompanied by a paying adult) and for ‘Torino Card’ holders.
