Registrar’s office, certificate of residency and identity card

To register with the registrar’s office, you must have a residency permit [permesso di soggiorno] valid for a period greater than 3 months.

Documents to present:

• valid passport
• valid residency permit or card tax ID [codice fiscale]
• registered rent contract
• self-declared certificate [autocertificazione] of usable floor space of your domicile (for those presenting an application for the first time) or receipt of payment of waste collection tax on the new domicile

In the case of a foreign citizen resident in temporary housing facilities or community, a declaration of residence signed by the director or manager of the facilities is required.

Within 60 days of renewal of the residency permit or card, foreign citizens registered with the registrar’s office are required to repeat the declaration of habitual domicile [dimora abituale] in the municipality to the Office (Anagrafe) enclosing a copy of the new residency permit.

Persons who have not renewed their declaration of permanent domicile will be deleted from the lists of the population resident in the municipality.

Children born in Italy to foreign parents who are registered residents can be registered with the registrar’s office, even if they do not appear yet on their parents' residency permit.

To obtain an identity card, it is necessary to go to the registrar’s office [Anagrafe] and present:

• 3 identical recent photographs
• a valid passport
• a valid residency permit [permesso di soggiorno]

The identity card is issued for the same period as the residency permit and is not considered valid for expatriation.
