Issuance of residency permits –Clarifications

Published 2007.06.02

The Police Headquarters sends an sms as well as a registered letter to the applicants informing them of the date of convocation.

This is done because often the registered letters are not collected or are sent to an unknown address.

The information also appears on the Immigration Portal, as sometimes the applicants do not receive an sms (because they did not indicate their telephone number in the application for renewal) or the registered letters (for the reasons indicated above).

If, after checking on the website, applicants who have filed for renewal / update, etc. discover that they have missed appointment, scheduled a few days before, they should go to the Police Headquarters in Corso Verona and arrange at the window for another appointment, or wait in line until all the people scheduled for that day have been seen.

When requesting another appointment it is a good idea for foreign citizens to exhibit a printout of the Immigration portal showing the date of their original convocation.

Those who apply directly for renewal at the Police Headquarters (for example, when a family member joins an Italian or E.U. citizen) no appointment is given and the procedure takes about 45 days and can be checked on the lists posted at the Police Headquarters.

For applicants requesting citizenship by descent (as for some Argentine citizens), the Registrar’s Office does not accept postal receipts and it is therefore necessary to go to room 9 in via Grattoni to obtain a printout of the temporary residency permit that certifies the application for citizenship and permits registration and acceptance of the application for recognition by the Registrar’s Office. This will be necessary until the decree abolishing brief permits is published in the Official Gazette.
