Adding children to a residency permit or card
Published 2008.02.26
Minors, up to the age of 14, are added to the residency permit or card [permesso o carta di residenza] of one or both parents, or of the relative with custody of the child (law 184/83) and follow the juridical condition of the parent or parents with whom they live.
On reaching the age of 14, the child is issued a personal residency permit for family reasons, or a resident's card (if one or both parents possess it and apply for one for the minor).
On reaching the age of 18, if the minor is not in possession of a resident's card, the previous residency permit for family reasons can be converted into one for a self-employed or subordinate worker (taking account of the minimum working age), an unemployed worker or a student.
To add a child under 14 to your residency permit, the following documents are necessary:
If born abroad:
- Photocopy of the passport of the parent on which the minor has been included, or photocopy of the child's own passport, if any.
- Photograph of the child.
- 4 photographs of the parent.
- Family certificate [stato di famiglia] and place of residence of the parent (a personal statement is acceptable).
- Birth certificate [certificato di nascita] of the minor indicating the parents’ names, translated and legalized by the Italian embassy abroad.
- Declaration of the employer of the guaranteeing parent or, if self-employed, business registration from the Chamber of Commerce [Camera di Commercio], with the date of start of business.
If born in Italy:
- Photocopy of the passport of the parent on which the minor has been included, or photocopy of the child's own passport, if any.
- Photograph of the minor.
- 4 photographs of the parent.
- Family certificate and place of residence of the parent (a personal statement is acceptable).
- Birth certificate of the child, with the parents' names.
- Declaration of the employer of the guaranteeing parent or, if self-employed, business registration from the Chamber of Commerce, with the date of start of business.
