With the circular no. 2218 of 8 May 2009, the Ministry of Interior provided clarifications regarding the renewal of the residence permit for parents over fifty.

According to the Viminale, descendants who are over fifty year old, in order to renew the residence permit for family reasons, should show a health insurance contract pursuant to the new regulations introduced by Legislative Decree no. 160 of 3 October 2008. Therefore, awaiting the issue of the Decree of the Ministry of Economy that will establish the fee for registering with the social security service for parents over fifty, the Ministry has introduced a few disposition to clarify the characteristics of the health insurance.

Following are the main new key points:

• who starts papers for family reunion in favour of an ascendant who is over fifty, should write a statement of commitment to underwrite the insurance;
• the over-fifty parent, within eight days from his/her entry in Italy and before the presentation of the request to the one-stop-shop, should underwrite an insurance policy;
• the insurance policy should be open-ended and cover all accident, illness, and maternity risks;
• for the purposes of renewing the residence permit due to family reasons, the over-fifty ascendant should demonstrate to have underwritten a health insurance.
