Italian citizenship

Published 2008.01.02

The Home Office has issued a circular to the Prefectures concerning developments over the interpretation of legislation governing the acquisition of Italian citizenship, in which some new aspects are introduced:

  • Income limit assessment will be made not only with regard to the individual position of the applicant but in relation to the income of the entire family. This will enable even temporarily unemployed men or women to apply for citizenship if husband and/or wife have documented means of support adequate to meet the needs of the family.

  • In order to ensure that the timeframe for procedures necessary in order to grant Italian citizen ship favour the applicant, applicants’ financial situation will be updated first of all, before any possible turning down of the application due to insufficient income.

  • As far as the assessment of the continuity of legal residence in the country is concerned (10 years for non-EU citizens), possible brief trips outside of Italy for personal needs, study or business, if supported by suitable and valid documentation, will not be considered an obstacle to the granting of Italian citizenship.

  • Matters concerning foreign minors adopted by Italian citizens will be handled in such a way so as to facilitate as much as possible the integration of the children into the Italian community with full status and rights.
