Facilitations for transit

A telegram released by the Ministry of the Interior establishes, on a transitory basis valid from 1 August 2008 to 31 January 2009, certain facilitations for transit through the EU member states by citizens of other countries, who have a permit of residence which is currently undergoing renewal and who are therefore able to present the receipt of Poste Italiane SPA.

During the period of validity of the telegram, it will be possible to transit through the countries within the Schengen area, crossing road, sea and air borders. These countries are, besides Italy, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Austria, Greece, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Malta.

The documentation required to travel, for those awaiting renewal of their permit of residence, is:

1. passport or other equivalent ID document valid for international travel;
2. original or copy of the old permit of residence;
3. receipt certifying presentation of the application for the renewal of the permit of residence.

For holders of the receipt of application for a first permit of residence, it is possible to leave and return to Italy as long as the outward and inward journeys both take place across the same border and no transit through any country in the Schengen area takes place.

The provision by the Ministry of the Interior is valid until 31 January 2009.
