What is the explanation for prejudice and discrimination? Ignorance, fear conformity to traditions. Prejudices create stereotypes that are somehow reassuring because they provide a mark, an identity to what is unknown or different from us, but they can lead to intolerance and violence, sometimes psychological, sometimes even physical, and even to actual wars.
Something is moving, slowly and in a measure unthinkable up to a few decades ago, such as women’s access to jobs once considered strictly for men (bus and taxi drivers, lawyers and judges, scientists and physicians at the highest levels) or young foreigners who become shop owners, entrepreneurs, specialized labourers, and disabled people who enter the world of work and sports. The Presidency of the City Council of Turin, the Committees for Rights and Equal Opportunities and the periodical cittAgorà are organizing a photographic competition on the subject of equal opportunities for all, as part of the initiative for the European Year of Equal Opportunities.
The photographic competition is open to young people between the ages of 18 and 35, who can send a maximum of 3 digital photographs, taken in Turin, to the following address: concorsofotografico@comune.torino.it.
All the material must be submitted by October 15, 2007.
The rules of the competition, application form and waiver to be filled out by every person photographed, if recognizable, are available in .pdf format.
The application form and waiver, if necessary, can be sent by e-mail and also via fax to the number 011/4422424.For more information contact the Press Office of the City Council ufficiostampa.consiglio@comune.torino.it
