Unemployment benefits

Published 2009.08.21

You are entitled to benefits in the event of dismissal (by your employer).
The benefits:

  • are paid for a maximum of 180 days (6 months)
  • can be extended to 270 days (9 months) if at the time of dismissal the worker was 50 or older.

To apply for benefits:

  • you must have at least 2 years of unemployment insurance (you are ensured with payment of social security contributions during normal employment)
  • you must have at least 52 weekly contributions in the 2 years preceding the date of dismissal (one weekly contribution is equivalent to one week of work, and 52 weeks of work are equivalent to one year)
  • you must be registered in the unemployed lists
  • you must present the application for unemployment benefits to INPS within 68 days of the start of their unemployment.

The benefits are paid every month by INPS and amount to 40% of the wages paid in the 3 months prior to dismissal.

Payment of the indemnity ceases when the worker:

  • has been paid all 180 days of benefits
  • starts a new job
  • is cancelled, for any reason, from the unemployed lists
  • becomes eligible for a direct pension (old-age, retirement, early retirement, disability or invalidity).

Workers from countries outside the EU with a residency permit [permesso di soggiorno] for season work are not eligible for unemployment benefits.

Unemployment benefits with reduced requisites
To be eligible, a worker who does not have the requisite 52 weeks of contributions (52 weeks of work) in the last 2 years can apply on the basis of one or more jobs for a total of at least 78 calendar days in the previous calendar year.

You must have at least 2 years of unemployment insurance (you are ensured with payment of social security contributions during normal employment)

In this case, benefits will be paid for the same number of days worked in the preceding year, up to a maximum of 156 days; they amount to 30% of the reference wages.

To obtain benefits you must apply to INPS by March 31 of the year after the one in which you became unemployed.

Workers from countries outside the EU with a residency permit for seasonal work are not eligible for unemployment benefits.
