This is an benefit applicable to children born or adopted after July 1, 2000.

It can be requested by:

  • Working women with at least three months of social security contributions (in the months between the 9th and the 18th prior to the birth or adoption of the child).
  • Unemployed women workers on condition that the date on which they lost their social security coverage is no more than nine months before the date of birth or adoption of the child.
  • Working women who resign from their job during pregnancy and have at least three months of social security contributions in the months between the 9th and the 18th prior to the birth or adoption of the child.

In case of mothers from countries outside the European Community, the essential requisite to obtain maternity benefits [assegno di maternità] is possession of a resident's permit [carta di soggiorno].
The application must be presented to the INPS (NHSS Office) within six months of the date of birth or adoption of the minor (if this term is not respected the applicant loses the right to the benefits).

Mothers who do not have the right to any maternity benefits for other reasons, or who live in a family which does not have a higher income than the limit indicated, can receive maternity benefits granted by the municipalities of residence (for every child born or adopted after July 2, 2000).

Women from countries outside the European Community, must also be in possession of the resident's permit (Carta di soggiorno) in this case.

There is a third type of benefit, paid by the municipality of residence, to families with three minors, but it only applies to EU citizens.
