Registering a birth

Published 2012.06.11

The birth of a child in Italy must be reported to the registrar’s office [Ufficio di Stato civile] of the municipality or to the management of the hospital in which it occurs.

This can be done by:

  • one or both parents,
  • a doctor,
  • a midwife or other person present at the birth, within 10 days of the event, at the registrar’s office of the municipality or within three days at the offices of the hospital management.

To make this report it is necessary to have a valid identification document and a birth certificate [certificato di nascita] issued by the hospital. No residency permit [permesso di residenza] is necessary.
