Unified offices for immigration

Published 2006.09.09

These offices [Sportello Unico per l'immigrazione] provide the information necessary for the employment of foreign workers and requests of nulla osta for family reunification.

With regard to the procedures for requesting a nulla osta for family reunification, it should be noted that the Turin police headquarters [Questura] at no. 4 corso Verona are no longer concerned with this and you should apply to the Prefecture of Turin at 205 Piazza Castello, where you should also mail applications by registered letter with return receipt.
The application will be sent, by the office, to police headquarters, which will carry out the necessary investigation and report directly to the office, with its decision whether or not to issue the nulla osta.
After receiving the favourable opinion of the police, the office of the Prefecture [Prefettura] issues the document permitting reunification of the family and requests the tax authorities [Agenzia delle Entrate] to assign a temporary tax IC [codice fiscale provvisorio] or verify whether one already exists. The foreign citizen is called to the office (by phone, e-mail or regular mail) to receive the nulla osta or the reason for its denial. The Prefecture sends the nulla osta via fax to the appropriate Italian diplomatic or consular representative. This latter will verify the existence of the requisites foreseen by law and will issue a visa to the family member of the foreign applicant, notifying the Prefecture via fax or e-mail.
When the visa is issued, the foreign citizen is informed of the obligation to go to the Prefecture within 8 days of entering Italy.

The same procedure applies to requests of nulla osta for visas for other family members, in the cases foreseen by art. 29, clause 4, of the Unified Text on Immigration (entrance into Italy of family members to join foreign citizens in possession of a residency permit or card [carta di soggiorno], or working visa for a contract of subordinate employment with a duration of not less than one year, or self-employed worker, or resident in Italy for reasons of study or religious reasons, if the requisites exist for reunification of the family).

With regard to requests for nulla osta for family reunification presented prior to February 25, 2005 the reference is still the police station at no. 4 corso Verona 4.

For all requests of nulla osta for family reunification presented after February 25, 2005, however, the reference is the Unified Office at the Prefecture.
