GAZA

Gaza City, Territori PalestinesiGaza (in Arabic: - transliterated - Gazzah; in Hebrew: Azzah) is the largest city on the Gaza Strip, an important part of the Palestinian Territories. The city has been settled since 3,000 b.C. and today, its population roughly reaches the figure of 400,000. It’s frequently called with the English name of “Gaza City” to distinguish it from the Gaza Strip itself.

Located on the beautiful Mediterranean coast, Gaza is a very ancient city, dating as far back as 3000 b.C. Currently it’s the largest Palestinian city. Located on the crossroad of three continents, it has always been a forced stopping place for commerce as well as a strategic target.  Local economic development is based on the city’s vocation in the following fields: fishing, agriculture, craftsmanship and industry. With its four universities and good education system, Gaza is also a cultural and educational centre.

REASONS FOR THE PARTNERSHIP

The City of Turin has undersigned cooperation agreements with the City of Gaza to promote and favour dialogue in an area where it has primary importance. Two formal acts precede the Twinning Pact between Turin Council and Gaza signed in September 1999:  City Council Motion no. 50 approved on October 22nd 1996, stemming from the purpose of supporting and encouraging the Middle East peace process by increasing existing relationships further and establishing new ones, and Municipal Council Deliberation number 01362/01 dated March 6th 1997, which approved twinning Turin City with the Cities of Gaza and Haifa.

The institutional partnership between Turin and Gaza is coherent with the traditional presence of Turin’s non profit bodies in the Israeli-Palestinian area and with the intention to coordinate Turin City’s policies with Co.Co.Pa., ANCI, National coordination of Local Authorities for peace and human rights and the European Cities of Barcelona, Dunkerque and Lion (belonging to the EuroGaza network).
