Main expected goals

The NUR project aims to give to Bethlehem an overall vision of environmental sustainability, fostered not only by the boost of local authorities, but also by the decisions of both individuals and the system as a whole. Thus, these are its objectives:

  • Enhancement of the energy efficiency of Bethlehem public lighting system.
  • Enhancement of the energy efficiency in some public buildings, with special regard to lighting devices.
  • Provision of 100% renewable energy system for the Christmas tree lightning in Manger Square.
  • Increase the production of renewable energy through the installation of photovoltaic systems, both on an urban scale (for example at the bus stops), and on micro-plants (for example on municipal, residential and school buildings).
  • Realization of micro-plants also in other Palestinian cities to spread a model, to maintain a sense of inter-community and promote the dissemination and sharing of good practices among different local authorities.
  • Laying the basis for a technology transfer by supporting the development of new local entrepreneurship, also with training courses for young people in the area.
  • Designing training programs for young people and definition of business models by using study plans addressed to four different targets (students, small entrepreneurs / artisans / technical workers, company administrators and teachers).
  • Supporting some start-ups in the renewable energy sector, will be inserted by the University of Bethlehem start-up incubator and join them by the Chamber of Commerce of Bethlehem at the end of the project.
  • Raising awareness of the local population regarding energy saving and greater use of renewable energy.
  • Improvement of the renewable energy supply chain governance, starting from a strategic Energy Plan scheme for the Municipality of Bethlehem and maximizing the extent of the territory on which apply sustainability policies.
  • Promotion of the project within the Turin Islamic Economic Forum and other international events in the Middle East.
  • Realize an exchange between Italian and Palestinian teachers and promotion of awareness actions in secondary schools.
