Turin is a prestigious reference point for the antiques trade.
All over the city, it is possible to find "boite"
(shops) of restorers of funiture and painting and craftsmen
specialised in a variety of trades. Over the years certain
street in the city centre have been populated by antique shops
that have joined those that already exist here.
n particular, Via Maria Vittoria, that crosses Via Roma,
has become specialised in this field: elegant shops display
furniture of great quality and value, hina, period paintings,
oriental antiques, Art Nouveau lamps, tapestries and sculptures.
Also Via della Rocca and its neoighbouring streets are noted
for their antiques shops and restorers' workshops. The entire
qurter is populated by shops, some with famous names, that
deal in top quality antiques, old master paintings and rare
furniture. Others are specialised in modern antiques, old
fireplaces, period jewellery, silver and ornaments.
Via Bava, near Piazza Vittorio Veneto, is a more recent phenomenon.
It has today become a street of upholsterers, lacquerers,
restorers of furniture and paintings, and antiquarians. Thanks
to the combined efforts and initiatives of its shopkeepers,
and the adoption of a standardised shopfront design. Via Bava
has been transformed from an insignificant traffic route to
an enchanting experience for all lovers of antiques.
Talking about antiques, the antiquarian book shop simply
cannot be ignored - a tradition that has long been a feature
of Turin. In some famous shops in the city centre, it is possible
to find books of great rarity, first editions, 16th and 17th
century atlases, and plans of the city during the various
historical periods. Many other shops specialise in the sale
of old prints.
The shop windows are an irresistible temptation not only
for connoisseurs and collectors alike, but also for the newcomers
to this particularly fascinating segment of the antiques market.
