A city of water, parks and gardens

"The city with the most beautiful natural position" was how
Le Corbusier defined Torino. Surrounded by the crown of the Alps and hills, with over 16 million square metres of parks and gardens, 400 kilometres of tree-lined roads and a park 70 kilometres long along the city's four rivers (Po, Dora Riparia, Stura and Sangone), Torino possesses an environmental heritage that few cities in the world can boast.
To protect and improve this great resource, the City of Torino has launched two major projects: "Torino Città d'Acque" and "Corona Verde". The first provides for the environmental recovery of all the river banks; the second for the creation of a route that will link all of the city's great urban parks, forming a green ring of a further 12 million square metres.
The hill above Torino is of considerable interest for its natural environment, architecture and views. Within the area of the city, we also find two Protected Regional Areas: the nature reserve of Superga (almost 750 hectares) and the Mesino Park (home to Europe's largest urban colony of grey herons).
Both can be reached on foot from the city centre.
Parks and gardens are only a short walk away in Torino: green areas that allow the city to breathe, bringing the tranquillity and smells of the seasons within reach of everyone. Starting with the Royal Gardens alongside the Royal Palace reaching up towards Piazza Castello, continuing with the Parco del Valentino that runs along the Po from the southern edge of the city up to the central Corso Vittorio Emanuele. A vast park that contains the Castle and Mediaeval Village designed by the architect D'Andrade for the International Exhibition of 1884.

The torinesi have always lived on the Po - along its banks are the homes of the historic rowing clubs: Armida, Caprera, Cerea and Esperia. The river is navigable: a romantic visit to Torino can be made up the river from the Murazzi as far as Moncalieri on the "Battello sul Po".
